Why Vegan?

Why Vegan?

I choose to be vegan, not for reasons of health (although that is a substantial benefit), but to reduce as much as possible, the suffering of animals. In the United States alone, over 10 billion land animals are slaughtered for food uses. I could do into all the statistics, but hot damn, is it depressing. I grew up closer to cows, chickens and other "farm" animals than the average person living here, and having looked into their eyes, I saw no difference between the animals that we keep in our homes and spoil rotten and those that we breed to grow to huge sizes and ruthlessly kill for no reason, but for food that we do not nutritionally require.

That, to me, is insanity. I do not aim for perfection and can't claim that no animal suffers due to my chosen diet, but I do as much as I can by putting my money where my ethics are. I personally choose to eat a whole foods based vegan diet and not support the many industries that contribute to animal suffering. On a daily basis, I choose to be joyful, compassionate advocate for both the non-human animals and the humans on this planet.

If you want to know more about these topics, please visit my resources page. There are tons of people out there doing all kinds of work and are informing people about the welfare and plight of animals both in this country, and abroad.

In any case, the objective of this blog is to give everyone out there yet another source of delicious, affordable vegan food that anyone should be able to make in their own kitchen. I think most would probably categorize me in the "dirt poor"  income bracket, but I make the best of cheap and nutrition power houses. In any given week, I do not spend more than $40 on groceries ( I live in the Seattle area, so that amount might differ from region to region), but I eat extremely well. I hope you enjoy everything here!
